BlendPDF vs Smallpdf: Is Smallpdf Free? An Honest Comparison

The honest answer is “free for light use.” Smallpdf’s free plan lets you run a limited number of tasks per day, which is fine if you occasionally compress a file or merge two documents. Where people get frustrated is mid-project: you are three conversions into a batch of five and hit the daily cap, and the tool asks you to wait until tomorrow or upgrade to Pro. Some capabilities — OCR, for instance — sit behind the paid plan entirely.

None of that is dishonest on Smallpdf’s part; it is a business with a clearly advertised freemium model, and its paid product is good. But if what you typed into the search box was “is Smallpdf free,” the practical answer is: partly, with daily limits, and the numbers change over time — check their pricing page for what applies today.

BlendPDF answers the same question differently. Every tool on the site is free for everyone with no daily counter. The only limits are technical ones we publish openly: 50MB per file, and up to 20 files or 100MB total per merge. There is no Pro plan those limits are designed to sell.

Smallpdf is a mature product used by millions, and it earns that. Its toolset is broader than BlendPDF’s: OCR for scanned documents, a full e-signature product, PDF editing and annotation, and organization tools. It extends beyond the browser with desktop apps for Windows and Mac, mobile apps, a Chrome extension, and integrations with cloud storage services. For companies, it offers team plans and enterprise features.

If your work involves scanned paper documents (OCR), legally signing documents through a managed workflow, or you want the same tool on your desktop, phone, and browser, Smallpdf is the stronger choice and worth paying for. BlendPDF does not have apps, an extension, OCR, or a signature workflow with an audit trail — and we would rather tell you that plainly than pretend otherwise.

BlendPDF’s model is simple: the core PDF tools, free, with the same limits for everyone. No daily task counter, no watermark on anything you produce, no ads, and no account — ever. You never enter an email address to download a file (email delivery of results exists as an optional convenience, nothing more).

The tools are built to be trustworthy rather than flashy. Compress PDF runs on Ghostscript, keeps text selectable rather than flattening pages to images, and if it cannot make your file meaningfully smaller it returns the original file instead of a degraded one. Protect PDF applies real AES-256 encryption using qpdf. PDF to Word uses the pdf2docx engine, which handles standard documents well; complex multi-column layouts and RTL text may need cleanup afterward, and we say so on the tool page. Word to PDF converts via LibreOffice, so uncommon fonts may be substituted. PDF to images exports at a true 300 DPI for up to 100 pages. Repair PDF attempts recovery with qpdf and pypdf; it rescues many corrupted files but cannot fix everything.

One honest caveat: BlendPDF’s Sign PDF adds a visual signature overlay, not a cryptographic or certificate-backed signature. If you need a legally managed signing workflow with identity verification and audit trails, Smallpdf’s e-signature product is the right kind of tool for that job.

BlendPDF deletes uploaded files from its servers within one hour, and most are removed immediately after processing. Your document contents are never read, stored, or shared — processing is fully automated and no person looks at your files.

We will not claim “zero tracking,” because it would not be true of us or of most sites: BlendPDF uses Google Analytics for aggregate, anonymous usage measurement, such as which tools get used and how often. What we never collect is anything tied to you or your documents: no account, no required email, no document contents. Smallpdf documents its own retention and security practices in its privacy policy; if privacy is your deciding factor, read both policies directly.

BlendPDF ships a full Arabic interface with a proper right-to-left layout, and its processing preserves RTL text direction and character order when merging, splitting, and converting documents. This is a first-class feature, not a translation bolted on afterward. Two honest caveats: text typed into the watermark, page-number, and typed-signature tools currently supports Latin characters only (Arabic input support is coming), and converting complex Arabic layouts to Word is a hard problem for every conversion engine, including ours — expect some cleanup on multi-column RTL documents.

Choose Smallpdf if you need OCR, managed e-signatures, desktop or mobile apps, cloud integrations, or team features — and the free plan’s daily limits either suit your usage or are worth paying to remove.
