We embed the watermark directly into your PDF. Text watermarks are added as text overlays, while image watermarks are embedded as images. The watermark becomes part of the PDF file.
Text watermarks are simple text overlays (like 'DRAFT' or 'CONFIDENTIAL'). Image watermarks use an image file (PNG or JPEG) that you upload. Both can be positioned and adjusted for opacity.

Once a watermark is embedded in a PDF, it becomes part of the file. To remove it, you would need to use a PDF editor or recreate the PDF without the watermark.

Yes, the watermark is applied to all pages of the document. There is currently no option to watermark only a page range. If you need that, split the PDF first, watermark the part that needs it, and merge the parts back together with our Split and Merge tools.
Be realistic: a watermark deters casual misuse but is not security. It becomes part of the page content and cannot be removed in a viewer, but someone with a PDF editor and time can remove it — especially a single centered mark. Tiled watermarks at moderate opacity are harder to clean. For actual protection, use the Protect PDF tool, which encrypts the file with AES-256.

Yes, and it works well. The watermark is drawn on top of each page, and a scanned page is just an image, so the mark sits over the scan exactly as it would over regular text. No OCR is involved or needed for watermarking. If you also want the scanned text to become searchable, run the file through the BlendPDF OCR tool before or after watermarking.

Word can only watermark documents it can open and edit, and re-exporting a PDF through Word often changes the layout. Acrobat Pro has powerful watermark options but requires a paid subscription. The most common errors: a watermark image that is not PNG/JPEG, a file over 50MB, or a "too many requests" message (wait a few minutes; the limit is 20 files per 15 minutes). If a valid file still fails, it may be corrupted — try the Repair PDF tool first.
